What is Neurodivergence?

Neurodiversity is the idea that it's normal and acceptable for people to have brains that function differently from one another. Rather than thinking there is something wrong or problematic when some people don't operate similarly to others, neurodiversity embraces all differences. The concept of neurodiversity recognizes that both brain function and behavioral traits are simply indicators of how diverse the human population is.

According to the CDC, 1 in 7 people has a neurodivergent condition. Neurodivergence simply means that one’s brain works differently than what is considered the norm. However, we live in a society where most expectations are based on the “norm” or Neurotypical thoughts, actions, feelings, and behavior.

Neurodivergence includes Autism, ADHD, learning & communication differences, sensory processing difference, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia & more. One can be clinically diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning the diagnosis.

We live in a country that bases our societal norms on Neurotypical standards and this can cause complex functioning difficulties, identity issues, and even trauma for Neurodivergent individuals.

What is disability justice?

Disability justice is a framework that examines disability and ableism as it relates to other forms of oppression and identity (race, class, gender, sexuality, citizenship, incarceration, size, etc.).[1] It was developed starting in 2005 by the Disability Justice Collective, a group of "Black, brown, queer and trans" people including Patty Berne, Mia Mingus, Stacey Milbern, Leroy F. Moore Jr., Eli Clare, and Sebastian Margaret."[1] In disability justice, disability is not defined in "white terms, or male terms, or straight terms."[1] Disability justice also acknowledges that "ableism helps make racism, Christian supremacy, sexism, and queer- and transphobia possible" and that all those systems of oppression are intertwined.[1] The disability justice framework is being applied to the intersectional reexamination of a wide range of disability, human rights, and justice movements.[2][3][4][5]
